Children's Book Week 2026 in my Shepherd's Hut

As Seonaid read: “Oh no no no, we’re holding hands and we won’t let go!”

To celebrate, all the island children were invited to bring favorite children’s books to the hut. They all love books: Every child in Scotland is sent a box of children’s books at birth and at intervals throughout childhood. Once a year, Scottish children go to school dressed as their favorite character. Two of the guests at this party had chosen the heroine of THE PAPER DOLLS.

My friend Seonaid read it aloud and began by saying she made lots of mistakes. The children all eagerly corrected her when she started by saying, “The Paper Pigs.” The story was new to me and I was charmed.

Thank you

  • Grace Lin for making the BOOKS: GET CURIOUS poster (just visible in the background) and including IS THAT THE BUS?

  • Julia Donaldson for writing such a charming story

    &

  • Jane Austen for in addition to all your books introducing me to my now favorite alcoholic beverage, small beer (2.5% alcohol). That’s what I’m drinking here—the children had apple juice and the other adults had Prosecco.

You can hear Seonaid and all of us reading the chorus here.
